Barista FIRE is semi-retirement: a partial portfolio that covers most of your expenses, supplemented by part-time income you choose rather than endure. It lets you leave the grind years before you could afford full financial independence.

In the traditional FIRE framework, you accumulate a portfolio large enough that the 4% rule covers 100% of your expenses indefinitely. Full FIRE requires 25ร your annual spending. For many people, that is $1,000,000โ$2,000,000 โ a goal that can take 15โ25 years of aggressive saving.
Barista FIRE takes a different path: build a smaller portfolio that covers most of your expenses, then bridge the gap with enjoyable or low-stress part-time work. The result is a dramatically smaller required portfolio and an earlier escape from the intensity of full-time career grind.
Portfolio = (Annual Expenses โ Part-Time Income) รท 0.04
If you spend $50,000/year and earn $15,000 from part-time work, your portfolio only needs to cover $35,000 โ requiring $875,000 instead of $1,250,000. That is a meaningful reduction in required savings.
The number-crunching is straightforward. Here are several scenarios:
| Annual Spending | Part-Time Income | Portfolio Needed | vs Full FIRE |
|---|---|---|---|
| $40,000 | $10,000 | $750,000 | (Full FIRE: $1,000,000) |
| $50,000 | $15,000 | $875,000 | (Full FIRE: $1,250,000) |
| $60,000 | $20,000 | $1,000,000 | (Full FIRE: $1,500,000) |
| $70,000 | $20,000 | $1,250,000 | (Full FIRE: $1,750,000) |
The higher your part-time income, the smaller the portfolio you need โ and the sooner you can leave high-pressure work behind.
In the United States, health insurance is one of the most important practical considerations for any early retirement strategy. The ACA marketplace is available to early retirees, but premiums can be substantial โ often $400โ$800/month or more per person without significant income-based subsidies.
This is where part-time employer-sponsored health coverage becomes enormously valuable. Several employers are known for offering health benefits to part-time workers (typically 20+ hours per week), including:
Employer-sponsored family health coverage can be worth $10,000โ$25,000/year in premium savings โ essentially a significant raise compared to buying ACA coverage out-of-pocket. For many Barista FIRE practitioners, the health benefit is the primary reason to maintain part-time employment even if income alone is not required.
Partial portfolio + part-time income = fully covered expenses. May or may not be still growing the portfolio. Lifestyle: semi-retired, working by choice.
Portfolio large enough to grow to full FIRE target without contributions. Work only to cover current expenses. Future fully secured, present expenses funded by work. See our Coast FIRE guide.
Portfolio funds 100% of expenses via the 4% rule. No work required. Complete financial independence.
For many people, Barista FIRE offers something full FIRE cannot: immediate relief from the most stressful aspects of work, years or even a decade earlier.
Research on human well-being consistently shows that autonomy โ the ability to choose when, how, and how much you work โ is one of the strongest predictors of job satisfaction and life satisfaction. Barista FIRE does not eliminate work; it eliminates the compulsion to work a specific job regardless of its impact on your health and happiness.
Many Barista FIRE practitioners report working more years in semi-retirement than they would have in a stressful full-time career โ because work becomes genuinely enjoyable when it is on your terms and at a pace you set.
